7 Negative Effects on the Body When Sleeping Immediately After Sahur

Nina Astuti February 11, 2021

As we know that fasting begins with eating suhoor before fertility so that we can endure hunger and thirst for approximately 13 hours. The time of sahur is indeed the time that has been determined by Islam as the time to fill our stomachs before fasting from early morning until the Maghrib call to prayer arrives. Of course, at dawn is a quite difficult time to get up and even eat.

For this reason, it is not surprising that many people immediately choose to sleep again after dawn because they are afraid that they will not be able to carry out their daily activities. However, eating immediately after dawn turns out to have a serious risk to your health. This is because going to sleep immediately after eating has a negative effect on our health. Going to bed immediately after eating can certainly affect the body’s health in the long run. By knowing some of the facts below regarding the negative effects of sleeping immediately after eating, it is certainly possible that you can change this habit.

Why You Shouldn’t Sleep After Eating Sahur

Apart from sleeping after eating sahur, of course, it can have a bad impact on our health. This is because when food enters our stomach, the stomach will digest the food into food juices which are then absorbed by the body to be used as an energy source. The fact is that our digestive system takes at least 2 hours to process the food that enters the body to become food essence.

The digestive system of our body certainly requires a large blood supply. For that, we are not recommended to do strenuous activities after eating Suhoor, such as exercise. However, if you choose to sleep after eating, that is certainly not the right thing either. During your sleep, of course, almost all body functions are automatically temporarily shut down, except for the heart, lungs and brain. For this reason, sleeping after eating will not provide enough time for the digestive system to break down food. Going to sleep again after eating is certainly an activity that is strictly prohibited because the food we consume will be piled up in vain in our stomachs.

Immediate Negative Effects of Sleeping After Meal

Going to bed immediately after dawn is believed to have a bad effect on our health. This is because when you sleep, most of our organs will die. So during sleep, our body’s digestive system will be obstructed so that food debris will accumulate in the stomach. Here are some of the negative effects of sleeping immediately after Suhoor, including:

Stomach acid will rise

When you have heartburn, of course, you should really avoid the habit of going to sleep right after eating. This is because sleeping immediately after eating will cause our digestive system to be very difficult to digest the food we consume. This condition certainly causes problems in our digestive system, one of which is a high enough increase in stomach acid. This is because if digestion cannot process food properly, it will automatically increase the production of stomach acid so that it can speed up the process.

When you sleep, the force of gravity will certainly loosen the stomach valve which in turn will cause stomach acid in the stomach to flow and return to the esophagus. As we know that stomach acid will erode the lining of the esophagus wall so that it can cause injury to the esophagus area. This of course can cause heartburn, a burning and sore sensation in the chest to throat and also intense pain in the gut area. This is the reason why going straight to bed after eating is not justified.

Stroke

However, sleeping after eating will make it very difficult for our digestive system to process food. This means that the stomach requires more blood intake to smooth its work. In fact, if we know that the brain needs a fairly stable blood intake even though we are sleeping. The blood supply to the stomach will deprive the brain of oxygen. If this condition occurs for a long enough time, the brain will experience a stroke, either mild or severe.

Another theory, of course, states that you will experience the risk of stroke immediately if you make the habit of sleeping right after eating. This theory is also of course related to an increase in stomach acid, which causes sleep apnea, which indirectly triggers a stroke. Apart from strokes, eating straight to bed can also increase blood sugar levels, cholesterol levels and blood pressure will also increase which will have an impact on increasing the risk of stroke. You need to know that the risk of stroke is related to the habit of sleeping immediately after eating, namely ischemic strokes which may occur due to blockages in blood vessels in the brain.

GERD or stomach acid reflux

When the amount of stomach acid is produced continuously in large enough quantities, the stomach acid problem will rise to GERD (Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease). GERD is a condition as a continuation of stomach acid which rises at least more than twice per week. The occurrence of GERD can of course be caused by the dividing valve between the throat and stomach not closing completely, causing stomach acid to come back up into the esophagus. However, stomach acid can irritate the throat, causing a variety of other symptoms, including:

– Bitter mouth sensation

– Nausea and vomiting

– Sour taste at the back of the mouth

– Food feels like it’s going up into the esophagus

– There is a burning sensation in the gut

– Difficulty swallowing

– The stomach feels bloated

– Burp

– Often coughs

– Hoarse voice

– Pain in the chest, especially when lying down

– Hoarse voice

– Difficulty swallowing

The occurrence of accumulation of fat

The next negative effect that might occur is the accumulation of fat. Like a study which reported that the habit of going to bed immediately after dawn by the offspring of obese families would certainly lead to the risk of obesity. This is because the food that enters the stomach will indirectly be digested by the stomach while you sleep. Of course, the calories in these foods will be stored in the form of fat, especially if your meal is all fried. Jeremy Barnes, a professor from Southeast Missuori State University stated that as long as we fall asleep, the brain will actually stimulate the stomach to increase levels of the hormone grehlin which will increase hunger when you wake up.

The occurrence of constipation

Normally, the food we consume will be digested by the stomach and will be empty two hours later. After that, the remaining food will move to the intestine to be compacted into feces. However, if you go to sleep right after eating, this will slow down the digestive process so that the food will stay in the stomach too long. This of course causes fat deposits in the stomach that are not digested as well, which will cause our digestive system to become disturbed, such as diarrhea or constipation.
This condition also depends on what we eat and enter our stomach.

Tips to Avoid Drowsiness at Sahur

It cannot be denied that at dawn we will feel sleepy and it is very difficult to eat. In fact, sahur is one of the obligations that must be carried out before we are ready to carry out fasting. After we know that going to bed immediately after Suhoor is a prohibited activity because it can have a negative effect on our health. Maintaining the pattern and time to sleep is very necessary during the fasting month. When we eat and sleep we will experience changes for approximately one month.

Vitamin C is of course abundant in several types of vegetables and fruits. When breaking and also Suhoor, try to keep eating foods that contain a lot of vitamin C. However, vitamin C is very important for our bodies. Vitamin C will be in charge of absorbing iron more effectively by the body. Lots of vegetables and fruits are rich in vitamin C. You can of course eat oranges, guavas, mangoes and other fruits that are rich in vitamin C.

The intake of nutritious and nutritious food and drinks is very important, especially during the fasting month.
