Sometimes, the leaking of amniotic fluid is difficult to distinguish from water that is also leaking out through the vagina or through urine. For example, when pregnancy enters third trimester the uterine wall is subjected to pressure caused by the baby growing bigger. At that time the mother will experience vaginal discharge. Leucorrhoea This usually occurs when the mother enters late pregnancy, so that most people think that it is amniotic seepage. In addition, when the uterus continues to grow, it will press on the mother’s urine bag, without realizing it, the urine will leak out by itself and you often think it is amniotic fluid.
Then how do you know what fluid is coming out of the vagina, amniotic fluid or urine? Collect and observe the color of the discharge on a clean bandage. Amniotic fluid is usually colorless and has no smell. If you are in doubt, whether the fluid that leaks out of the vagina is urine or amniotic fluid, then the mother should immediately go to the hospital for further medical examination. The doctor and midwife in charge will check and test the acidity of the water that is leaking out or it can be called the nitrazine test using the lamkmus paper test. If the water that seeps out is amniotic fluid, then the acidity test of the alkaline liquid will change the color of the paper on the litmus paper to blue.
Meanwhile, if the fluid that is leaking is urine, the litmus paper does not change but remains red because it is not acidic. In other cases, some amniotic fluid is greenish, or brownish yellow, if this happens, ask a doctor for treatment immediately. Tell your doctor about all your complaints about the fluid that oozes out and the color of the discharge so that the doctor immediately identifies and immediately takes action that may be needed.
How much volume of fluid that oozes out is caused by tearing of the amniotic membrane all depends on how big the tear occurs. The bigger the tear, the more fluid that oozes out. If this happens when the mother enters late pregnancy, then the discharge of amniotic fluid is a sign that the mother is about to give birth. However, if the mother’s pregnancy is still quite young, the profuse leakage of amniotic fluid can result premature birth. Generally, the doctor will immediately take certain actions to reduce the risk of infection in the baby and mother caused by the tearing of the amniotic membrane. If the tear in the amniotic membrane is very small you need not worry too much because most of it can heal on its own.
