Is it safe when candy is used as a distraction for the child’s condition, is it true that consumption of candy that contains excess sugar will cause children to become hyperactive? Sweet foods are not only available from candy, some foods that are liked by toddlers such as chocolate, packaged drinks and others contain sugar which causes bad effects on health. One study conducted in Boston, United States states that a sugar rush can be suffered by children, namely those who consume foods with a high glycemic index. Foods high in glycemic index can increase the level of sugar in the blood quickly, although not for long. The increase in blood sugar experienced by children will provide a boost of energy and make it difficult for children to focus their attention. Is it true that consuming too many sweet foods can cause hyperactive children?
Hyperactivity is an abnormal behavior disorder caused by neurological dysfunction so that it is difficult to focus attention. One of the causes is due to minor damage to the nerves, center and brain so that concentration becomes difficult to control. There is an opinion from The American Dietetic Association (ADA) that there is no scientific evidence that causes children to become hyperactive due to consuming lots of sweet foods. As for the assumption that connecting sweet foods can make children hyperactive arise because some children who consume sweet foods at party events tend to behave actively, obviously this cannot be concluded that sugar rush (foods with a high glycemic index) can cause children to be hyperactive. Instead of blaming sugar as the cause of hyperactivity, you should examine your environment, one of which is a factor that causes children to become overstimulated.
Although consuming sugar will not affect the child’s behavior to become hyperactive, some children may be sensitive to sugar compared to other children. Research has found that behavioral tendencies such as a lack of concentration and learning ability are experienced by children who are sensitive to sugar when consuming very large amounts. Apart from that, it is better if you as a parent limit foods and drinks that are too sweet to maintain the health of your child, especially dental health. Consuming too much sweet food will cause children to become lazy to eat, especially fruits and vegetables because they are used to eating sweet foods.
