How to Give a Baby a Bath

Midwife Pevi Revina STr.Keb February 12, 2021
  • Prepare in advance the baby’s bath needs.
  • Fill warm water (36-37 C) to the bath, check the temperature.
  • Take off the shirt, wrap it in a towel on your lap, wipe the eyes with a cotton ball dampened in cold boiled water, clean around the face and mouth.
  • Clean the eyes from outside to inside, use a damp cotton swab.
  • Wash the head, face, neck, chest, arms, back and legs. Pay attention to the fold area.
  • Wash your head and body. Use a washlap. Choose a baby soap with a formal PH balance so it doesn’t hurt your eyes.
  • Shampoo her hair, hold her head above the bath. Dry, remove the towel, place one hand under his shoulders, while resting the other hand on his buttocks. Put the baby slowly in the bath.
  • Support the neck and shoulders, soap and rinse. Grab her butt and lift it. Wrap it in a towel. Pat dry. Leave the baby wrapped in a towel while wearing clothes and diapers.

There are several things that need to be considered in bathing a baby, especially in certain parts where the conditions are so difficult to reach and also considering the baby’s sensitive skin condition. These specific areas are:

Cleaning around the baby’s genitals

Clean the dirt that is on the foreskin slowly, gently push the skin of the penis against the clothes. Wipe (seko) dirt with wet gauze.

Clean the pubic area from front to back (from the genitals to the anus and can be repeated with new gauze), as well as the groin.

Clean the inside of the ear and nose

  • Clean the exposed nostrils with a damp cotton swab.
  • Clean the outer ear which can be seen with a damp cotton.
