When to Perform Prenatal Diagnostics on Pregnant Women?

Midwife Pevi Revina STr.Keb February 11, 2021

The above factors are a separate concern for mothers during pregnancy. So that it often becomes a question for doctors about the pregnancy they are experiencing. For pregnant women who are tested in general, they will be divided into three categories. The first category is low risk, medium risk and high risk. So it can be concluded that all pregnancies have risks, but what distinguishes them is the level of risk that can affect pregnant women and the fetus or not at all. Prevention efforts so that the risk of pregnancy is low, you can carry out prenatal diagnostics. This prenatal diagnostic can detect the fetus in depth. This examination is recommended for pregnant women with fetuses suspected of having a disorder.

Disorders that require this examination include chromosomal abnormalities or congenital disorders, especially heart disease. In addition, if you are examined for impairment and function of the placenta or fetal kidney, it is required to go through a prenatal examination. Even some doctor’s suspicions regarding the growing baby often lead to prenatal examinations. The benefit of doing prenatal diagnostics is that it can detect abnormalities in the fetus early so that prenatal therapy can be done in its treatment. In fact, it does not rule out that doing prenatal diagnostics will lead to medication therapy that must be done continuously in support of preparation for labor, one of which is anemia. The next benefit is to prepare mentally and financially so that it can provide far more optimal medical preparation. This is to help pregnant women with high risks during pregnancy avoid the worst possibilities such as death in the fetus and death in the womb.

Generally, prenatal diagnostics will be carried out as needed, at 11-13 weeks of gestation, tests are carried out to detect abnormalities in chromosomes, anencephaly and Down’s syndrome. At 11-13 weeks of gestation, the placenta can also be examined. Even at 15 weeks of gestation, an examination can be done to measure the amniotic fluid as needed. Meanwhile, if the gestational age is 20-24 weeks, an ultrasound examination can be done so that it can find out any congenital diseases that may occur in the fetus. So the question that is commonly asked when to do prenatal diagnostics is when a routine examination of pregnant women is carried out and it is found that a high risk of pregnancy is associated with disorders of the baby’s condition both mentally and physically so that it can reduce the risk of the disorder. In addition, mental preparation for pregnant women and their families is important when dealing with possible distress to the baby who is born. The handling of the fetus will then depend on the individual case, so the operation will be adjusted according to the conditions maternal and fetal health.
