Recognize Signs of Gestational Diabetes in Pregnant Women

The period of pregnancy is the most important period in a woman’s life. Women can feel truly like a woman when they are pregnant. The happiness of being a complete mother will be felt in a few moments. For this reason, it is very important for women to always be able to maintain their health during pregnancy.

Conversely, when a pregnant woman is stricken with a disease, of course this condition can interfere with the health of the mother and the fetus in her womb. Well, of the many diseases that may be experienced by pregnant women, diabetes or diabetes is one of the most frightening diseases. During pregnancy, diabetes this is known as gestational diabetes mellitus.

However, in general, this disease condition will disappear by itself after a pregnant woman gives birth to her baby. For the cause itself, this condition is influenced by many factors, such as an immune system disorder, excessive carbohydrate consumption during pregnancy, obesity or obesity and insulin disorders. So what is insulin? Insulin is an enzyme in the body that is produced by the pancreas to help transport glucose into cells. If glucose cannot enter the cells, this substance will accumulate in the blood and cause blood sugar levels to be higher.

Pregnant Women at Risk for Diabetes

In addition to some of the causes above, pregnant women who are at risk of increasing gestational diabetes (gestational diabetes) are those who have several conditions as below.

  • Have problems with weight or even obesity
  • Have a family history of experiencing a similar disease, namely diabetes
  • Mothers who have previously had diabetes, then in their next pregnancy will also be at risk for contracting the same disease
  • Have a previous history of diabetes
  • Urinary tract infection that occurs repeatedly
  • If the parents of pregnant women have diabetes, it is likely that pregnant women will increase their risk of the same condition.

In addition, if pregnant women often experience urinary tract infections, they are also likely to suffer from the same disease during their pregnancy. Actually there are many more factors that can increase the risk of pregnant women with diabetes, above are just a few examples that can allow pregnant women to be affected by similar disease conditions.

Signs of gestational diabetes in pregnant women

Gestational diabetes can occur when a pregnant woman’s insulin reserves are not sufficient to meet the extra needs of pregnancy. About 50% of pregnant women affected with diabetes will likely experience type 2 diabetes in the future. Despite the symptomatic signs, diabetes in pregnancy must be found otherwise. This condition will increase disorders such as neonatal macrosomia and neonatal hypoglycemic which may not be recognized and not treated quickly.

Before the availability of insulin, it was not uncommon for a woman with diabetes to become pregnant. Their pregnancy can have a serious impact on both the mother and the fetus in her womb. For this reason, below are some important symptoms to recognize in pregnant women who have diabetes.

Experiencing Excessive Thirst

People who suffer from diabetes will tend to show symptoms of excessive thirst even though they are getting enough of the fluids they consume. This condition will be more pronounced than those who do not have the same condition. In normal people, in general, they will consume enough as much as 8 glasses of water every day to meet their daily fluid needs in their body. However, for those who suffer from diabetes this number can be less and the desire to drink will be much more with frequent intensity.

Urinating frequently

This one sign will be more visible at night where the sufferer is constantly disturbed by sleep by going back and forth to the bathroom. Conditions like this of course can disrupt the sufferer’s biological clock and make them not get enough sleep. For that, seeing a doctor is an important thing to do.

Increased Hunger

Pregnant women in general will need food intake more and more than those who are not pregnant. This is because they need to have sufficient nutrition and nutrition for the fetus that is growing in its womb. However, diabetics can also experience a condition where they eat large quantities and often feel hungry easily. Unfortunately, this condition is often not recognized and makes this one sign of diabetes difficult to recognize.

Experiencing Excessive Fatigue

Similar to the signs above, pregnancy hormones often make pregnant women feel tired and look sluggish. Often this one sign is difficult to distinguish between common signs of pregnancy and signs of dangerous diabetes.

In diabetics, fatigue often looks excessive even though they had not previously done activities that drained their energy or sweat.

Nausea

Nausea is generally a common sign that occurs in pregnant women. It’s just that, the condition of nausea during pregnancy usually only occurs in the early trimester of pregnancy. Meanwhile, if you experience nausea for reasons that are not clear then this condition needs special attention. Immediately consult this problem with your doctor so that further tests can be carried out in order to determine the appropriate treatment for pregnant women.

Blurred Vision Problems

In diabetics the most common sign shown is blurred vision accompanied by a disturbing feeling of dizziness. This will certainly be a sign that is enough to make you panic and annoyed especially if you are a career woman who is still working during pregnancy. For that, it is very important to get this condition checked by a doctor properly.

The above conditions explain the importance of regular check-ups and blood tests during pregnancy. Blood tests that are done can help detect gestational diabetes that occurs during pregnancy as well as the worst risk of this condition. For that, do not hesitate to go to the doctor and consult your health problems properly there.

Those are some of the signs and symptoms of gestational diabetes that may occur in pregnant women. The most important thing when you first find out is not to overreact, let alone panic. The feeling of anxiety that the mother experiences will probably make you stressed, which this condition will affect the baby in the womb. It’s better to find solutions and try to be calm will be able to reduce the situation and make you calmer.
