Every mother who is pregnant at an early age, of course, always yearns for a pregnancy that is currently going on as she hopes, her pregnancy continues for up to 9 months in a healthy manner. Every early pregnant woman certainly hopes that in the 9th month she can give birth to the world of a baby who is loved by her parents. However, humans can only hope and plan. Sometimes what is expected and planned is not what you expected, including pregnant women. Pregnancy that is longed for sometimes falls in the middle of the road due to various things, one of which starts from its existence pregnancy outside the womb, the existence of TORCH, wine pregnancy and what we will discuss here is the existence of an empty pregnancy condition known as Blighted Ovum.
Blighted ovum is also known as pregnancy without embryo. At the time of fertilization, the cells still form the amniotic sac, placenta, but the fertilized egg (conception) does not develop into an embryo. In a blighted ovum, the gestational sac will continue to develop, like a normal pregnancy, but the fertilized egg fails to develop completely. So, pregnant women who experience blighted ovum, will feel that the pregnancy is mediocre, as if nothing happened, because the gestational sac is developing as usual. During early pregnancy, the production of the hormone HCG continues to increase, pregnant women when tested positive, also experience symptoms such as other normal pregnancies, nausea, vomiting, dizziness, constipation and early signs of pregnancy other. However, at 6-8 weeks of gestation, when pregnant women with blighted ovum check their pregnancy to a doctor and perform an ultrasound, they will detect that there is a pregnancy sac containing an undeveloped embryo. So, the symptoms of blighted ovum can be detected through ultrasound examination or until there is bleeding like experiencing symptoms of a threatening miscarriage (imminent abortion) because the body tries to remove an abnormal conception.
Blighted ovum or empty pregnancy, sometimes in some societies there are connections with mystical things. There are those who say that the pregnancy was lost, carried by the creature or the baby was transferred to another person, etc. Because the impression is that the baby disappears, even though pregnant women who experience blighted ovum experience signs and body changes like a normal pregnancy, but when the ultrasound checks the fetus is not there / does not develop. But of course all these mystical things are not true.
Blighted ovum occurs during the early days of pregnancy. The cause of blighted ovum is not known with certainty, but it is suspected that it is due to a chromosomal abnormality, genetic abnormality, or an egg with a poor condition is fertilized by normal sperm or vice versa. Unfortunately, Blighted Ova cannot be prevented or avoided. For the treatment of a blighted ovum, there is no other way except to remove the product of conception from the uterus. This can be done by curettage or by using drugs. However, curettage is considered to have an advantage because it can prevent infection and also check chromosomes.
Blighted ovum has no effect on the mother’s uterus or on fertility problems. Someone who has experienced blighted ovum can return to normal pregnancy. However, if the mother experiences repeated blighted ovum, it is better to do intensive examination and treatment, because it is feared that there is a chromosomal abnormality that remains in the mother or husband. The doctor may suggest genetic testing or therapy for 1-3 months before trying to get pregnant again, depending on the condition of the doctor’s examination.
For mothers who have blighted ovum, remain steadfast and pray, there is still great hope of being able to get a normal pregnancy in the next pregnancy. Once again, we can only plan and only God is the one who determines, but we must believe that God always gives us the best. Amen.
