Likewise, when pregnant women, quality food intake is equally important to be maintained during the breastfeeding period. Breastfeeding mothers must be able to regulate and understand what foods enter their body. This is not only to facilitate or increase milk production, but also for the health of our beloved baby.
Unfortunately, until now there are still many new mothers who do not know what foods are safe to eat while breastfeeding and which foods should be avoided. Meanwhile, to produce 600 to 800 ml of breast milk a day, a nursing mother needs an additional 500 calories in her body. Which additional calories can you get from consuming healthy foods. However, the thing that the mother should be aware of is that the food that she thinks is delicious during breastfeeding is not necessarily good and suitable for the baby.
Well, here are some lists of foods that mothers should avoid while breastfeeding:
1. Soda and Caffeine
If you are a connoisseur of these two drinks, it’s best to maintain the health of the baby and maintain the quality of breast milk, so avoid consuming these two drinks, even if it’s only a little. Caffeine is a substance that is absorbed by the intestines. In fact, more than 99% of the caffeine consumed will be directly absorbed by the blood which is then distributed to all parts of the body including the brain. Conversely, caffeine is a substance that is difficult to remove from the body through urine. In adults, it takes about 5 to 6 hours to remove half of the caffeine level in the blood. While babies, it takes up to 14 hours to remove these substances from the body. This is triggered because the baby still has difficulty metabolizing the caffeine that enters his body. For that, as wisely as possible immediately regulate and reduce consumption of these two drinks.
Broccoli is indeed a vegetable that is rich in nutrients and contains antioxidants that are good for the body. Unfortunately, broccoli and cauliflower can cause problems in the baby’s digestive system which will make the baby get heartburn and pass gas frequently. This is due to the effect of the gas contained in broccoli which makes babies want to keep passing wind. For that reason, it’s best to avoid consuming foods containing broccoli or cauliflower for a while, during the breastfeeding period. To replace it, mothers can consume carrots or spinach.
3. Spicy Food
Spicy and spicy food is tempting to eat. Especially if the weather is hot, the desire to eat spicy food will be even more appetizing. It’s just that spicy foods like cinnamon, curry, chilies and peppers are not good for the health and digestive system of babies. For that it’s better, reduce the consumption of these foods. So that the baby’s health can be maintained properly. (Read: Can a Breastfeeding Mother Eat Spicy?)
