In fact, the suggestion of the sentence ‘be open with the sweet’ is a simplified conclusion or interpretation of dates. Which in his day, the Prophet always broke the fast by eating 3 dates, because these dates taste sweet, then from there a mistaken meaning emerged that grew into a suggestion that the Rasullulah habit was ‘open sweetly’. The purpose of eating sweet foods when breaking the fast is to replace the energy lost after a day of fasting. It’s just that, we should not take these recommendations for granted.
After a day of fasting, then when breaking the body, the body is immediately given sweet foods repeatedly, it is not good for health. Iftar is necessary with something sweet, however, this does not mean that the choice of iftar dishes must be filled with foods that taste sweet.
Consumption of sweet snacks that are done repeatedly when breaking the fast will actually result in a rapid increase in blood sugar. Generally, sweet foods with simple sugar content will make the blood sugar levels in the body rise and fall quickly.
When the blood sugar in the body drops rapidly, what will happen to our bodies is a feeling of weakness. For this reason, consuming sweet foods and drinks continuously when breaking the fast does not increase energy, it actually makes our bodies feel so weak.
Thus, when breaking your fast, it is better if you start with drinking water so that the body is immediately hydrated to replace the large amount of fluids wasted during fasting. After that, you can consume sweet foods and drinks to taste. And you know, this is also what Rasulullah did. Rasulullah recommended breaking with a glass of water and 3 dates instead of breaking with sweet foods and drinks. In addition, dates are fruits that contain complex carbohydrates instead of sugars (simple carbohydrates) which can cause health problems
And a few moments after eating dates, then heavy dishes are allowed to be eaten. Meanwhile, to keep blood sugar levels normal, it is better to be selective in choosing food, not because of hunger, suddenly you take revenge by eating food served at the table blindly. Try to eat foods with a lower glycemic load. These foods will be digested by the body more slowly so that the increase in directional sugar will be stable for a longer time. In addition, don’t forget to include fruits and vegetables to keep your nutrition fulfilled.
