The New Technique of IVF with 3 Biological Parents Has Lots of Controversy

Nirmala Adrian February 11, 2021

Having children is definitely one of the goals and desires of many parents in the world.

Even though it is a big hope, sometimes we as humans cannot force it if the opportunity doesn’t come to us. But indeed as humans we should not give up trying. It takes patience and also a lot of confidence to be able to have children. That way there will still be efforts made to get it.

Regarding the matter of pregnancy, of course there are various kinds of things that can be taken to get it. Starting from common and common medical methods, to alternative methods that are sometimes strange and also difficult to accept.

Of the many ways to get children or offspring, then you may recognize a method known as IVF. IVF itself is known as a way to get a baby which is considered quite controversial and for some people it is said to violate religious norms.

Regarding IVF, the British government recently agreed to the IVF program with DNA from 3 people at once. So that in the future the child will have 3 biological parents at once. The technique, which continues to be developed at the University of Newcastle, England, tries to take advantage of the role of a “second mother” to help with genetic errors that occur during the conception process.

With this new technique, there will be embryos containing DNA from 3 people as the prevention of rare genetic diseases caused by mitochondria in cells. This rare genetic disease is known to pass from mother to child. The mitochondria in the cell are also known as the cell battery, and are very important for the survival of the children who will be born. If the mitochondria in these cells are damaged, the baby who is born will experience some serious health problems, namely breathing problems or liver problems.

Combining these three DNAs involves a transfer process in such a way that the embryo will not be affected by the damaged mitochondria, but only the good neuclose. With these conditions, of course a woman with damaged mitochondria can have healthy children and the mother does not pass on her damaged mitochondria to the child.

Certainly this new technique of IVF has immediately sparked a great deal of debate. There are two camps who express their opinion, namely those who agree with this new technique and also those who do not agree if this technique is used. Those who test this new technique consider this technique a new history in the world of progressive medicine. For those who do not agree to reveal the reason if the presence of this 3-gene IVF, it can cause the baby to be designed.

Jane Ellison as minister of health in England agreed to develop this one IVF. According to him, with the implementation of IVF, it can be the only hope for women with genetic diseases to have healthy children. By doing this technique also children of mothers who inherit mitochondrial disease can avoid the fatal consequences caused by mitochondrial disease.

On the other hand, Sir Edward Leigh expressed his disapproval of the development of this new technique, he said that this new technique was not ethical enough for treatment. He revealed that this disease is one of the natural conditions of man, but he asked where will this modification continue? Together with Sir Edward Leigh, several Christian groups in England also expressed disagreement with this.
