Expressing breastmilk can be done by direct hand or by means of a tool such as a special pump for expressing breastmilk. Many breastfeeding mothers have difficulty expressing breastmilk by hand, so they choose to use a pump that is more efficient in obtaining breast milk than using their hands. The thing you have to remember is that using a breast pump should not be arbitrary, choosing the right breast pump so that it is comfortable and does not have side effects for those of you who use it. The government, through the Indonesian Breastfeeding Mothers Association (AIMI), does not recommend using a squeeze bulb type breast pump or better known as a trumpet-like funnel type, if you have difficulty choosing an breast pump.
Here are tips you can take to choose a breast pump:
1. In terms of security
Most breast pump materials are made of plastic so make sure if you choose a breast milk pump that is made of safe plastic material, you can look at the available packaging to see what types of materials are safe for you to use for your baby. We recommend that you use High Density Polyehylene (HDPE) plastic or you choose a plastic that is free of Bisphenol A (BPA).
2. Select the pump type
You can choose the type of breast pump with the piston type, avoid choosing the trumpet type that will make it difficult for you to apply pressure to get breast milk. While the cylindrical type pump will make it easier for you to get comfortable and also easy to clean.
3. Choose a pump that is easy to clean
The use of the breast pump you are using will last for a minimum long term until your baby is old six months, so it is important for you to maintain and clean the parts of the pump. Also avoid using a pump that uses a rubber suction because you will find it difficult to clean the parts.
4. Select according to your needs
You can choose a breast pump according to your needs, you can specify a breast pump according to your abilities, such as a manual pump, electric power, a pump with a battery or a combination of batteries and electricity. If you have a lot of time for milking you should use a manual pump but if you don’t have much time you can choose a battery pump.
5. Consider the suction power of the breast pump
The strength of the suction power is very useful to make it easier for you to express milk, although for those of you who use a pump with high suction power it will make you a little sick than a pump that has a low suction power, a pump with a low suction power is usually known as a manual pump, if you use it. electric pump, select the one using the regulating power.
Thus, those of you who are going to use a pump to express breastmilk should be adjusted according to your needs and of course pay attention to the safety aspect for your baby’s health.
