Try these tips to get some comfort for those of you who are pregnant during your first trimester:
Condition: chest pain makes it difficult to get comfortable
For many women, the first symptoms of pregnancy are sore, swollen breasts caused by increased hormones and increased blood flow. Overall positive change as the body is preparing to adapt to breastfeeding.
Solution
Start sleeping on one side of you, which is the optimal position for fetal nourishment. As your breasts grow, make sure you wear a bra that fits well. Consider wearing a sleeping bra for pregnant women, and hugging a body pillow to help you protect your sensitive breasts.
Condition: You wake up and go to the bathroom often
Going to the bathroom more than usual during the first trimester and beyond. Blood volume increases by 50 percent during pregnancy, and that increases the amount you urinate by 50 percent.
Solution
Cut back on fluid intake a few hours before bedtime but be sure to get plenty of fluids during the day to compensate. To ease the transition back to sleep, avoid too much light. Keep night lights in the bathroom to avoid bright overhead lights and refrain from checking your phone (a text that can wait until morning!).
Condition: Pregnant women are too nauseous when going to sleep
Although often referred to as “morning sickness,” nausea during pregnancy can appear at any time of the day or night.
Solution
Eat small, frequent meals throughout the day to help combat nausea. To keep blood sugar levels in check, recommend enjoying a protein or fat sleep snack, such as cheese or peanut butter, and biting into chips first thing in the morning. For most women, nausea goes away around the end of the first trimester.
Condition: Lying down makes a pregnant woman’s heartburn worse
There’s nothing like indulging in pregnancy cravings (spicy or sour), only to regret it when you feel the sleep extinguishing burn in your chest and throat. Progesterone relaxes the smooth muscles, including the opening between the stomach and esophagus.
Solution
Dinner early, as a heavy meal before bed is a recipe for avoiding heartburn. Eat slowly and choose which foods make the heartburn problem worse. Instead of lying flat, raise your head either with an extra pillow or by raising the head of your bed
Condition: Can’t sleep when you are stressed
A lot of changes occur during the first trimester, so it’s no surprise you have trouble relaxing. Your body wants to rest, but your mind is troubled by some distractions that are burdening you.
Solution
For starters, avoid caffeine and sugar, even if you are not pregnant. If you feel stressed. For example, if you are nervous about birth, you could sign up for a yoga class to lighten your mind. Before going to bed, you can settle in with a relaxing activity: a warm bath or shower, a cup of warm milk or tea without caffeine, soothing music or relaxation exercises.
