In general, children do not understand the meaning they are saying. The role of parents is to be able to provide learning by means of communication to children that speaking harshly is a bad habit and should not be done. You don’t need to punish your child because by giving punishment your child will repeat it again beyond your supervision so all you have to do is communicate, give a good or bad understanding of an action so that it can be instilled from an early age.
For those of you who are confused in dealing with children who speak harshly. Here are some tips you can do so that your child doesn’t talk harshly:
1. Be Calm
When your child speaks harshly, you should be calm and don’t immediately get angry. You can keep your expressions and reactions calm, try to stay calm. You can also pretend you didn’t hear. Generally, at the toddler age children seek attention, so that if you reduce your attention it tends to be less.
2. Don’t be angry and don’t laugh
Try to stay calm and not get carried away with emotions. Avoid giving physical punishment. Corporal punishment will not deter your child, he will do it outside your supervision. Furthermore, avoid laughing because it will make your child think what he is saying is funny. On other occasions your child will repeat it again if you laugh at it.
3. Switch to a word that is almost closer
When your child says “stupid” you can switch to an approaching word like “bobo”. Also divert your child’s attention so that you don’t say these words.
4. Ask where your child heard it from
You can ask your child where to hear harsh words spoken. If in one of the tv handlers, then you can avoid the program. Then you explain that it’s bad behavior that shouldn’t be imitated.
5. Describe the good and the bad
This is one of the tips that is very easy but hard to do. Sometimes children are not obedient if they are advised once then you need time to give understanding, maybe up to 3-4 times but once again don’t use violence, let alone use physical violence.
6. Teach empathy
You can teach your child to empathize. For example, when your child talks “om is black” then you can give the meaning “God created white and black skin, black is good and white is good too. Then your child will learn to empathize.
